The Dilbert Blog Entertains The Philosomasses

February 18th, 2007 · No Comments

“It’s time to name what I do. I name it philosotainment.

It’s philosophy for the sole purpose of entertainment, not enlightenment.” –Scott Adams, The Dilbert Blog

Scott Adams is known mainly for the Dilbert comic strip. I have several on my fridge that are years old and quite enjoy them. After yellowing and getting ragged around the edges, they slowly vanish as my wife surrepticiously removes them to an unknown location….
To me they have seemed quite philosophical. Of course, I have no training in that area, so I really know almost nothing about it. However, I just love to look around at commonly held assumptions and ask questions. I like to think. Some people don’t, and they shouldn’t read The Dilbert Blog. For their own peace of mind. Those whose brains are landlocked just won’t appreciate it the same way.
On the other hand, there are a bunch of people out there who are brainlocked and do read Scott Adam’s blog. These people take real exception to his ideas and comment in an uproarious fashion.

As far as I can tell there are three main types of readers of his blog, and the interplay of some of these people is great.

1. People who find his writings thought provoking and entertaining and just show up to see what he has on the fire today. This is where I started out.
2. People who think the ideas presented are ridiculous and/or unnecessary and/or offensive to their intelligence. It doesn’t make them feel special inside, no sir. They can’t handle the truth!(tongue in cheek, I am by no means suggesting that Scott Adams writes only the truth. But he might….)
3. People who think that the ones in #2 above are just hilarious to read about. These readers check out the topic with interest and enjoy it. Then they look for the second payoff. They read the comments, but mainly they are looking for someone who sounds like a nimrod or a jerkwad. Lately I have found myself in this category. I still like the main posts, but I know someone else might take offense. Then the fun begins!

Scott Adams is a pretty clever writer, in my opinion. If you haven’t already checked out his blog, you should go there now. You might like it. Even better, if you hate it, please leave a comment. We need some fresh meat!
