A lot of people have been asking me about what kind of fish can be found in the Horseguard River.  And I am glad they asked.  The waters of the river tend to quite frigid due to the fact that it is a direct run-off from the glacier.  As a result of the cold temperatures the various animals/fish that inhabit the river tend to be blue.  As you all know, we have the Blue Beaver living there but the primary fish found in the Horseguard is the Blue Pike; sometimes called the the Blue Jackfish or the Blue Walleye.

Originally the Blue Pike was found in the great lakes especially Lake Erie.  It is similar to the Northern Pike in term of it’s growth rates and general social behavior.  In appearance though, it is  blue along the back turning to silver then white on the belly.  On the back is a large spiny fin very much like what is found on the perch.

From the late 1880′s to the mid 1960′s commercial and sport fishermen landed an estimated 1 billion pounds of the Blue Pike.  Then, unfortunately, their numbers declined drastically to the point where they became very nearly extinct.  A number of breeding pairs were then transplanted to the Horseguard River where they soon began to thrive.

These days their populations are closely monitored and controlled.  They have been introduced to other glacier fed bodies of water, which seems to keep them very happy.  The daily limit for anglers is three, and they must be a minimum of 15 inches long.  If you do happen to catch some Blue Pike you will find that they are some of the best tasting fish in the world today.  I recommend that you prepare a Blue Beaver Beer batter and turn them into fish ‘n’ chips, with blue potatoes of course and a simple chipotle/red pepper aioli for dipping.
