You’re Going to Brooks?!
12.06.07 # 8:49 # Uncategorized # No CommentIt’s funny how something as simple as a smell can trigger a really intense memory. I recently drove past a meat packing plant and I was suddenly transported back to the time that I visited Brooks.
Brooks has a very large packing plant and as a result the whole city has a very…powerful scent to it. There was one occasion when I happened to be walking past McDonald’s; the smell of the cooking burgers combined with the smell of freshly slaughtered burgers along with the aroma of the massive amount of manure (which is a natural byproduct of living burgers) was…powerful enough to actually overwhelm my sense of smell and cause a physical reaction. Fortunately there was a garbage can nearby. I was also lucky enough to be carrying a bottle of water with me, so I wiped my mouth and then rinsed it out. Of course then I was hungry again, which only made the …powerful smell that much worse. I hailed a cab, asked the driver to roll all the windows up tightly, and had him take me to a restaurant that was upwind.
But the city of Brooks isn’t all bad, there is very nice man made lake (Lake Newell) that has a large water spout in it. And a lot of assorted water fowl hang out there. It looks really cool and best of all it’s visible from the highway, so you can see it while you are very deliberately driving past Brooks.
