Recycle Those Kegs
4.07.07 # 5:19 # Current Affairs # One CommentBeer-makers could lose millions of dollars because stainless steel kegs are being sold for scrap. The price for scrap metal has increased all over the world due to a high demand for construction materials. An empty keg could fetch as much as $55 from a scrap yard, whereas the deposit on one may be as low as $10.
The breweries are now teaming up with the scrap metal recycling industry to let metal buyers know they cannot accept kegs unless they are sold by the breweries that own them.
The Beer Institute is pushing for legislation that would require scrap metal buyers to ask for identification from people trying to sell them kegs. Thus far, ten states in the U.S.A. have passed such laws.
When I buy Blue Beaver Beer for my own use, I only buy bottles or cans. And after hearing about this problem I went straight down to the nearest Redneck Bar and Grill and I proceeded to drain the keg for them. Then I made sure that they took the empty directly back to the brewery. I would like to encourage all of our readers to do that exact same thing. Think of it as "adopt-a-keg".
