I Pwn Yaks

July 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Dear Ernie,
I have a question about a famous animal in Canada but I forget its name.  It’s a kind of big horse with horns and it is in the cartoons.  My question is where is the best place in Canada to go to get a picture of this animal?  And can I take the subway there from Toronto?

Dear Bobbing For Cauliflower,
I believe you are thinking of the Yak.  The Yak has been featured on "Sesame Street" and "Family Guy" as well as other American television shows.  The best place to find this noble creature is close to the outer fringes of the Arctic Circle (which, as I’m sure you know, extends down to the northern-most edge of Toronto).  You won’t be able to take the subway all the way there however, you should have no trouble at all walking from Toronto to the Arctic Circle; it’s a short trip.  And I just want to say that we Canadians always look forward to helping our southern neighbours learn more about our great country.

Dear Ernie,
     WTF does "pwn" mean?

Dear Diction-less,
It’s a fascinating word, with an even more fascinating history.  It is a verb that is used by the online gaming community which means to beat or completely dominate an opponent.  It is generally assumed that it started out as a typo for the word "own", but people who have trouble spelling thought it was a highly amusing "word" and soon everyone was using it deliberately.  To correctly use it in a sentence you could say, "I pwn noobs."  I hope this clears things up for you.

That’s how to find things out. Very interesting.
