Hot Enough For You?

Does that question make you want to reach out and touch someone..in a really violent way?  Well you’re not alone.  My job requires me to interact with the general public while working outdoors.  So I get asked that question, on average, at least a dozen times a day.  Alas, there are rules against the striking of customers with a 2×4.  I usually just give a fake little chuckle and say, "Yeah, I guess so."  What I really want to say (you know, after the striking thing) is more along the lines of, "Nah; I’m hoping it gets up to a billion degrees so that you will burn up and I don’t have to hear that insipid question again!

I personally find this question extra vexing.  I am often able to put the heat out of my mind by focusing all my attention on doing my job and just simply not thinking about the sun beating down on me.  It’s the old mind-over-matter trick.  However, when people insist on constantly reminding me about the heat.  And comments like, "I’ll bet you can’t wait to get home and have a cold Blue Beaver Beer", really are not better.  That just reminds me that I am currently not drinking a Blue Beaver and it could be several hours until I can.

So if you want to make small talk (because you’re so insecure you need to hear total strangers agreeing with your opinions) why not try something original like, "Man, the universe sure is vast, isn’t it?" or "There have been a lot of people throughout history, haven’t there?" and if you were to simply say, "You know I’ve been thinking…", that would make me show a passing interest in any other witticisms you might have stolen from SNL.
