This Blog Rocks!

Have you ever heard the expression, "That rocks!"  I know I have.  If you aren’t familiar with the saying, you’ve most likely been living under some rocks.  It is used to describe something that is really "cool", "awesome", "tubular", "swell" or "nifty".  I personally don’t say it simply because I prefer a more highbrow approach.  "That was highly enjoyable/entertaining" is the expression I prefer.  However, I have noticed that no one ever says, "That country and westerns!"  Could this be due to a large number of people thinking that rock is somehow more exciting than country?  Unless the origins of, "That rocks!" have nothing to do with the genre of music.  Maybe it refers to geological rocks.  In that case why don’t we say, "That woods!"  I think that trees are a bit more exciting than the ground, but maybe it’s just me.  The dictionary also gives the definition, "move backward or forward or from side to side" for rock.  If that’s the case, if you say, for example, "I got off work early today.  That rocks!", do you mean that you feel as though you are moving from side to side?  That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.  So if the origin of the expression is related to the music, then why rock music?  If you are familiar with "Superman’s Song" by the Crash Test Dummies, you know it is a very slow and mellow song.  Did you realize, though, that according to iTunes "Superman’s Song" is rock?  So if you say something rocks, does that mean it is slow and mellow?  We should select a musical genre where all of the songs are always lively and upbeat and leave you feeling really good about life.  This can only describe polkas.  We should all start saying, "That polkas!" from now on.  It is far more accurate.
