The Circus Comes To Town
14.08.07 # 5:10 # Adventures in Real Life # One CommentA long, long time ago, in a galaxy far away, when I used to be a teenager; my friends and I had an expression, "Go to the circus." It meant…well it didn’t really mean anything definable. It’s sort of like when you hear young people today say, "Holla" or when Oprah says, "You go girl". It was something along those line. Not that it really relates to this post except in my own mind. You see the other day I actually did go to the circus.
Myself, Cynthia and her daughter Reegan all jumped in the car and headed over to the Circus Gotti. It had been a very long time since I was last at the circus, so I wasn’t entirely certain what to expect. Once we found some seats I looked around a little and I noticed a number of souvenir sellers. They were all rather large and tough looking men, some with scars on their faces, and they talked kind of like the characters on The Sopranos. They where selling an assortment of candy, balloons and toys, including replica tommy guns to "whack all youse wit’" as the guy said.
Soon, after purchasing many food and toy items in order to prevent further menacing, the ring master came out and sang the circus theme song. Everyone politely applauded and some people murmured how inspiring it was for someone like that to have the courage to get up in front of so many people and attempt to sing.
There followed some shapely skilled young ladies who did an act on suspended rings. Then there was a tight rope act culminating in the "never before successfully attempted" 7-man pyramid which was successful. Unfortunately between act we were subjected to a clown. His attempts to fire up the crowd worked well, after the souvenir-sellers did some more menacing ("Laugh at dat funny clown, or I’ll make youse cry"). There were some animal acts; the horses were well trained to prance and pose around the ring and the elephants were very impressive. There was a "magic" act that did not fail to not please me as well as some plate spinning that looked pretty nifty.
The final act of the evening was the globe. It was about 20 ft. in diameter and when the motorcycles (first one, then two, then three) got in there and started going around and around I became dizzy from the amazing spectacle. Although, maybe that had something to do with all that exhaust and the poor ventilation in the arena.
All in all it was an enjoyable and amusing show, and I only had to drink four Blue Beavers.

Nowadays, clowns seem to be seen as slightly scary.
