At a town council meeting in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia during April of 1853; a new law was made. It became illegal for geese to freely wander within town limits. The penalty for breaking this law was a fine of 5 shillings.
This poses some obvious questions, how do they make the geese pay this fine? Just catching them in the first place would be very difficult. How do you define the name of the goose on the paperwork? Not very many geese carry even 1 copper on their person let alone 5 shillings. If they don’t pay can you garnishee their wages?
Clearly this was one of those laws that just was not fully thought out. It must have been late on a Friday night, maybe the town councilors had already had a couple of drinks and they were trying to come up with a way to fill the coffers a little bit more. Someone suggested that they make it illegal for animals to follow their natural tendencies. Someone else seconded the motion; and everyone just voted in favour so that they could all go out and seriously get their drink on.
