The Merriam-Webster dictionary has added a new word this year and they also decided to make it their 2007 Word of the Year. The word ( or should I say “word”) is “w00t”. This is just another example of how our society is changing; and by changing I mean de-volving. Some new words are good; for example, “D’oh” and “truthiness”. Not a day goes by that I don’t use the word “D’oh” and just recently Tim was talking about truthiness. But to add a word like “w00t”? That just doesn’t make any sense at all. Technically you can’t even pronounce it because the middle part is actually numbers (and that is the way it is spelled in the dictionary). Are you supposed to say, “w-zero-zero-t”? And even if you did pronounce it “w-o-o-t”, who would ever say such a ridiculous thing anyway? Sure you can say “whoo-hoo” that makes perfect sense and it’s a real word (phrase?) because Homer says it. I guess our society really is changing. It’s not like when Tim and I were younger and we had words that made sense like, “tubular” and “gnarly”.

I am a purist :p Whoo-hoo definitely gets my vote.
