If you saw my other post on HHO hydrogen generators, you know we like to build our own homemade fuel cells. This stuff isn’t rocket surgery, folks. Even us rural Alberta rednecks can make a functioning HHO hydrogen generator from common hardware store items. Having said that, there is the potential to make a dangerous explosive device by accident. In fact, we did make an explosion accidentally. It happened in Aron’s house, on the kitchen table. The generator we built was working great, until it exploded and blew both ends off the housing. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and only the generator was damaged.
What we think happened was that a loose connection inside the unit made a spark, which ignited the hydrogen. Since then, we have modified our design to contain no connections of any kind inside. The anodes are one solid piece of material from the outside all the way to the end inside.
You can find lots of links to hydrogen generators, where you can get plans for them and even finished units at HHO Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generators. I have also started building a new website to put all of our HHO hydrogen exploits.

I still ain’t letting my hubby build one of those things.

I think our wives are kind of glad we are working on something semi productive for a change. We usually just light things on fire or blow hem up.

Thanks for the report about no no follow.

  4. sam from dirt bike cheap says:

I think it’s a great idea, obviously. But it could be way too dangerous for the average person. I think too many people will end up hurting themselves and others… but I could be wrong.

  5. Robert from Fire Extinguishers UK says:

Great post, I just hope people have all the safety equipment they need on hand before trying this on their own.

I think something weird has happened to the formatting on this page!!

  8. Interesting piece of work you got there! How many times did you actually had to rebuild it back together? As long as the whole experience wasn’t life threatening nothing should stop you to be curious, innovative and learn.

  9. Building a generator in general is risky business. I used to work with a mechanical engineer and he dealt with nothing but exploding generators and furnaces day by day. You have to be careful.

  10. Alex from Fire Extinguisher Training says:

If built correctly, these hydrogen gas generators are actually very safe. In cars, the hydrogen gas they produce is actually sucked right into the engine and ignited as the car runs. The gas is also only produced when the car is running and immediately ceases when the car stopped running.

The first time we built ours, we found that we couldn’t get to fit in the car (renault scenic) so my dad inherited it and is happy with the savings.

As you were talking about safety I was prompted to post this because my dad has now got the bug and is building a unit for one of the tractors on the farm. if you knew him you might get the idea of the impending disaster that looms.

No thats not fair, he is pretty good with his hands and will probably build a better one than mine. Great fun projects though and boy when you get those bubblers going, it’s like pure magic, gas from water. Wicked.

This sounds very dangerous. Thanks for the links on hydrogen generators.

  16. stacie from Garden Sheds for Sale says:

My boyfriend would love to see this page and make a hydrogen generator. Which is precisely why I hope he never sees it. His skills when it comes to things like this are non-existent – it sounds dangerous enough with you making one and you know what you’re doing. He’d end up blowing up the house. And maybe the houses next door.

  17. hi I would like to build something like this but don’t think I have enough know how as I would blow the house up but nice site and good blogs

  18. james from will writer says:

I’ve tried this and I would never do it again. Something went wrong, there was an explosion and my girlfriend’s Chanel shoes were nearby and well… I didn’t get any loving for a while. Not because I nearly lost my own life, but because I ruined one of her shoes.

  19. Tony says:

You must be very careful and not take any chances – I know that sounds obvious but the fact is that it is bad errors and accidents that ultimately lead to regulations and sometimes an over-protective approach

  20. john from building supplies says:

I made a hydrogen generator and I was so proud! And despite what my wife said before she had it taken away by one of her friends, it was not dangerous. I knew exactly what I was doing, it just overheated because of a minor issue that went wrong with it.

  21. freddie from stone flooring says:

I can’t be the only one who laughed at loud at ‘The generator we built was working great, until it exploded’. Anyway, hopefully you know now what the problem was. I used to try making these but I won’t do it again after I had an incident with an explosion of my own and some flames.

  22. Why would people used HHO hydrogen generators when they know that it is quite dangerous. They must used the safer ones because life of the person is very expensive that even millions is not enough payments.

  23. dlf from new homes for sale says:

If you must store hydrogen, you need to have ALL STAINLESS STEEL fittings. You need to use a stainless steel tank. Better yet, an expensive but safe metal hydride tank which will store the hydrogen gas in a solid form. Remember, a regular pressure pump might not have high quality stainless steel insides or corrosion resistant parts unless it is specifically built to handle acid or hydrogen. This goes for most valves, regulators or other parts you might think would work in a pressurized system.

  24. mark from IT Support London says:

I built a few of these for some friends and had no problems with it but I wouldn’t recommend to anyone that they attempt it unless they know exactly what they’re doing. It can be really dangerous and explosions are not fun.

  25. This homemade hydrogen generator is really effective. You no longer have to buy a veryexpensive one because you can make your own.

The grounding stakes of the hydrogen generator should be connected to the water can or to balloon launcher.
All the metal parts should be interconnected through grounding wires and they should be cleaned in such way that the bear metal is exposed. Wires and alligator clips can make the job easier.

  30. armil from electrician says:

It’s a nice piece of invention you have there guys. Every unit that has a loose connection in it can really make it spark and it will eventually explode. Good thing you come up with a design to contain no connections of any kind inside of that HHO Hydrogen Generator so now it’s safer to use.

  31. robert says:

To protect the wiring from long term damage, you can now put the newly installed wires into what’s called “split flex tubing”. You can find it in all major hardware stores such as Ace, Home Depot. Don’t buy it online ($5 +S&H) because in the shop it’s only 99 cents for 10 ft.
