Her Name is Amber, and She Tastes Like Maple

This past week-end I made the acquaintance of a new beer.  Now, whenever I meet a new beer I feel kind of shy and nervous.  Blue Beaver Beer is and always will be my first love, but we have an open relationship.  I am allowed to drink other beers and other men are allowed to drink Blue Beaver.  Still I try to limit how many others I “become familiar with”.

On the week-end though, I was introduced to Maple Amber Ale from the Banff Brewing Company.  My first taste was quite brief, but it was intense.  I immediately overcame my shyness and took a second, much longer taste.  As I savoured it, I tasted a smooth, rich  creaminess not often found in beer.  Then, of course, there was the sweet flavour of genuine Canadian maple syrup.  There may have been a time when I said I would only drink beer flavoured beer; but let me tell you friends, after those two sips, I became one of the converted.

My first taste was slow and sweet and lingering and just a little shy.  My second taste was not.  When I found myself desperately yearning for another sample of the Maple Amber Ale; I ran over, grabbed it and downed took it hard and quick like some sort of wild animal.  Alas, our relationship was over all too quickly.  We both had to go our separate ways.  However, while I can seek comfort in the embrace of the Blue Beaver; I will be searching for my new maple lover ale.

  1. I dunno know about that, maple flavored beer.

  2. My only experience with flavored beer was this chocolate stout… I love chocolate and I love beer, so I figured it was a match made in heaven.

    I was so wrong.

Is the maple beer kind of sweet? I’m trying to get some idea without tasting it. I’m too afraid.

  3. I’ve tried flavored beer before. Ales seem to work better than lagers and pilsners, but still… I’d hate to heave ho for the sake of curiousity.

  4. When I first read this post title, I sang it to the tune of “Copacabana”:

    Her name is Amber
    She tastes like Maple
With yellow feathers in her hair
And a dress cut down to there

    or something.

Interesting thing, J.D.; that’s exactly what was going through my head when I came up with the title. You win a prize. I’ll e-mail you a Blue Beaver.

  7. As long as it’s not in an envelope.

  8. Hey Ernie and Tim,
I found you guys via RT at his great Twisted Vortex blog. You guys are funny, and continue the long line of comedy giants from up North.
I used to think that beer was like pizza. You know, there’s good pizza and great pizza, but no bad pizza. Same went for beer. That is, until I had a flavored beer. Yes, Virginia, there is bad beer. So a friend of mine came to our house for a bbq with his wife two years ago, and she brought a six pack of Strawberry Blonde. She had one, I tried one, and now two years later I still have four of these things in my fridge. She hasn’t been invited back and I can’t bring myself to toss them out. None of my friends will drink them – they just look at me funny.
But your post gave me an idea. I’ve got a bottle of Maple Syrup (from Canada, nonetheless) in the fridge. ..
See where I’m going with this? Should I try? Or could this little experiment unleash an evil force I want nothing to do with?
    I await your saged advice.

  9. Oops, sorry about all the bolding. I guess this is why one should never get creative. I tried to bold “bad beer” and messed up the closing bold with the back slash in the wrong place, and didn’t check my typing. Feel free to fix it or leave it (sorry) and delete this comment.
RT implimented a cool plug-in that gives you a few minutes to edit a post (he gave me the bolding idea in the first place – let’s blame it on him). But then, perhaps the key is just to avoid creativity! :) ~ Steve

  10. I dont’ know about that Maple Flavored Beer. It is not sounds familiar. Thanks anyway!

  11. Ernie

Well, Trade Show Display (mind if I call you Mr. Steve Display), I had a dream once that I had six strawberry-blondes in one night…and then I drank some beer. As far as your experiment goes, first make sure it is genuine Canadian maple syrup, no imitation Canadians, then pour it into a Coors Light because nothing could make those things any worse.

  12. Ernie, LOL!
hey, as my dad loves to say, “you can call me anything you want, just don’t call me late for dinner.” So you can call me Mr. Steve Display (I like the mister part), or you can call me Steve the “trade show display” guy (like Tim the toolman, or Bob the Builder). Anyway, I’ve found mixing blondes and beers to be a very dangerous thing… The idea of blondes coated in maple syrup plus beer, look out!
As to your comment of the Silver Bullet / Pride of the Rockies, I’ll pass on that one. I’ve learned my lesson trying to poke fun at some of my less sophisticated friends. They would tell me “them’s fightin’ words”, and fightin’ with a Silver-Bullet-fueled drunk is no fight I want!
Well, enough for now I suppose.

  14. I’m kind of against flavored beers. The worst one that I have tried was the tequila-flavored beer (no, I didn’t buy it, some else brought it over). Maple beer would have to be better than that, but still — I’ll stick to regular beer!

  15. The only “flavored” beer I’ve ever liked is Schlauser Alt (sp?), which reminds you of chocolate. I know of beer that has a syrupy taste but I don’t think that’s what the beer makers were shooting for.
