How to Build Backlinks For Beginners

Published on December 9, 2008 by in Blogs

Ah, those wacky backlinks. Everyone wants a whole honkin’ armload of ‘em. Trouble is, it seems so confusing at first. What are backlinks? Are there good ones and bad ones? Where can I get them? Do they actually honk? Hopefully after you read this you will have a few clues on how to build backlinks for beginners. If you don’t have a website or blog this will probably perplex, bore or lose you in short order. Sorry, next time I will try to be more entertaining.

A backlink is simply one website linking ‘back’ to another. The reason they are valuable is that your site, blog post or other online missive will be ranked higher by the search engines (such as Google). A high SERPS ranking means traffic. And traffic is good! Unless you are in road construction, and then it is just a pain in the rear…

A backlink is always good, but some are way more valuable than others. The most common links back to your site might be comments on other blogs, online friends referring to your posts, or someone sending visitors to look at a picture, etc. A lot of the time these links are to your name, or “this article” or ‘Hat Rack Blog”. A really good backlink would be one like “how to build backlinks for beginners.” Why?
Because people might actually search for that phrase or those keywords online. They won’t probably search for “this article”, so Google will never send you any traffic because someone else’ site linked to you with the anchor words “this article”.

Where can you get excellent backlinks? Well, you can ask for them. If someone links to your article about golf shirts with an anchor like “here”, you could email them and ask if they would change it to “designer golf shirts” or whatever keywords you are looking to get traffic for. You can trade links with other sites, preferably relevant ones. A relevant site such as “Grady’s Golfing Tips” can give your golf shirts a much better link than “Stupid Funny Videos”. Unless there is a post with a funny golf video, then the link could also be good from there.

Writing ezine articles, leaving dofollow comments, making link badges, and the list goes on. I’m not an expert on any of these topics so I will let you research these on your own.

The best way is still to communicate with other site owners to obtain high quality, one way relevant backlinks with your chosen keywords. Sound hard?  A search engine community network such as ConnectContent can help you work toward obtaining these links with a minimum amount of work.

Is this type of thing ‘legal’? Will you get in trouble for it with the G man? The answer is no. All the ConnectContent network does is allow members to communicate their link term preferences to other members.

So if you are a blog owner or  website builder in need of quality backlinks, take a look at ConnectContent.

Hopefully this brief post gives you some helpful information on how to build backlinks for beginners.

  1. This seems like a unique service. I hope RT can make it a success.

The biggest issue seems to be identifying what back-links one would like to target and that’s the trouble most bloggers seem to be having.

Maybe RT can get a few SEO experts to offer advise as well on that issue to beginners.

Hari: I am working on figuring out my own backlinks, slowly but surely. There is at least one link to an expert at RT’s site, in the sidebar under “make money online”

  3. Sometimes it is really hard to create backlinks. Anyone who wants instant backlinks should pay otherwise, you’ll be stuck on working on free backlinks that entails so much effort and time. Nice article!

  4. I really hope this guy does a bang up job and helps his affiliates make a lot of money. If he doesn’t, he’s a real loser. Hey, wait, you’re talking about me!

  5. hey Tim,
Very nice post on how to build backlinks, and the importance of keywords and knowing what people are searching for. I think you summed it up better than many of the so-called seo experts.

  6. Seems like many with no page rank write about these subjects. I always check PR after reading posts of this nature. Most have a zero!

Buying links could very well get you sent to google no man’s land. Link share sites are fine if they contain quality page rank sites. You can get 1000 pr zero links, and they will be pointless.

Commenting and meeting new blog writers is key. Most bloggers find a niche, or circle of friends and stay inside that fence.

Webby: You hae to be careful how you get your links. Don’t find them in a bad neighbourhood…
RT: I have a pretty good feeling about it, but it might take a few months to really start cooking.
Steve: I’m good at the big picture. Sometimes I fall down in the details, though :)

    Eric: Nice Wordless Beavers post!
If you check the PR of this post, it will be “n/a” since I just wrote it. This post hasn’t had time to get ranking.
In any case, Pagerank isn’t everything. This article is aimed at getting search engine traffic, and lots of sites with a PR 0 or 1 get a TON of traffic. PR 3 or 4 means nothing if hardly anyone visits. In fact, this PR 3 site here gets less traffic than several of my PR 0 ‘niche’ blogs.
I disagree that PR 0 links have no value. A relevant link from a PR0 site with a good anchor like “beaver t-shirts” (assuming you have a t-shirt or beaver site) is still worth having, and at least as valuable as a link from a PR 4 that anchors with “this article”. Sure, you might need a lot more low ranking backlinks to achieve the same results, but it is pretty hard to target PR 2 and up only, if you are at PR 0.
Good point about buying links. To clarify, I never suggested buying was a good idea. Watch out for ‘bad neighborhood’ links!

  9. Good point.

I have lots of blogs, so I can see how things like PR affects them. My golf blog had 5 links, when a PR 4 and had TONS of traffic for a short while. Most were searching Natalie Gulbis.

Now it is not even indexed. I think because I “moved” posts there, Google saw it as copied material.

I great keyword campain is key too. People use terms that are too common. Finding a good subject is critical.

Truth be known, I just write a lot of crazy stuff, and do not pay much attention to the stats. I could care less about making money, so I am more of a comment whore.

    (sorry) ….. ha haaaaaaaa !!!!!

  10. ConnectContent sounds like a fantastic way to get backlinks, and right now I am in desperate need of them (but who isn’t?) PageRank is certainly important, but it ultimately doesn’t matter. If you have PR0 but have high SERPs for your targeted keywords, that’s all that matters. However, if that’s the case, then you should naturally have a higher PR.

By the way, my favorite method of link building is article marketing. Has done wonders for me in the past and continues to. Blog commenting is good too. In fact, I’m doing that right now! That’s just cool.

  11. Thanks for the informative post Tim. It was all very well explained. Thanks also for highlighting ConnectContent to us – it looks interesting and I will certainly have a read up on it. The closer you get to the top of the search results it become much harder to make further progress.

  12. I know this post is more about ConnectContent, but I’d like to offer an extra tip, one of the great ways to build links, is if you are part of a forum, and you have already posted alot of posts, or you just enjoy the forum. If they allow for signatures, to have your website as a signature. But offcourse, you should make sure that the forum moderator accepts links in the signatures.

  13. Sounds like you got a pretty good handle on backlinks. Good point about link badges. Most people don’t even know what those are though. Might want to explain.

  14. Like-minded people linking to each for relevant link terms is what makes the internets all connected. Good stuff! Got to be relevant though, so even with a good system like you share here if you aren’t vigilant you will find some non-relevant links. Fortunately the system has a way to correct for that.

  17. Interesting idea for a social networking concept. I have always thought that one of the best ways to get backlinks was to build a group of colleagues / friends who benefit from working in cooperation rather than opposition to each other. That seems to be what this community is attempting to do!
