Now, I’m certain that if you just took a little time you would have no trouble at all finding a vast plethora of internet sites that will give you all sorts of (vaguely) useful advice on how to increase website traffic. As Tim pointed out recently while doing backflips for backlinks, you could always go on Facebook and join dozens of different “groups”. Then all you have to do is constantly leave witty comments on all of the pages and hope that some of the other members will go back to your page and from there go to your main web site where they will then do whatever they have to in order to for you to get paid and/or increase your traffic flow. It’s just as easy as that.
A lot of people out there are also using My Space as a place to promote what ever it is that they do that they wish they could get paid for; whether it be recording music, creative writing, live web cams, or proof-reading new dictionaries. Some people prefer this because anyone can access their information instead of just their 2563 close personal “friends”.
The only problem with these social networking sites is that they are highly addictive. You have to log on several times a day and change your status, check to see what your thousands of “friends” are doing right this minute, add the 12 newest applications, or attack a bunch of people with your zombie/werewolf/vampire/slayer/pirate/school girl. And you have to spend time visiting and leaving comments with all of the multitudes of groups that you have joined. If you’re really lucky you’ll still mange to get two hours of sleep every night.
One other solution is to make several videos that are somehow relevant to your web site and then post them on some of the 6052 YouTube-like sites on the internet. Again all you would have to do it wait for people to make their way back to your home page. I’m certain that within a few months your hits will increase by…eight or more and you’ll be laughing all the way to the virtual bank.
Pretty soon though, they’ll need to make some sort of a free drug rehab program just for Facebook addicts. It will most likely be a two-step program. Step 1: cancel your account and never go back there again. Step 2: leave the house and interact with real live people. (Just for the record that second step is not something that I would ever personally endorse.) Come to think of it there’s probably already a support group for Facebook addicts; you should be able to join it on Facebook.

All good points. I’m not that familiar with Facebook, and don’t intend to get familiar. Seems like Twitter is the rage these days, but it also seems like Twitter is like crack, and I don’t intend to do either of those either. I’ll just stick with reading the Redneck Bar and Grill.

Heh! The last line was especially ironic and funny. What’s ironic about all this is that even if something works, you still don’t have a life to enjoy the success. And if you start enjoying the success, then you’re not successful any more…
Seems like you just can’t win
Facebook is not that addictive. Try twitter. At one point I was spending around 4-5 hours a day just on twitter. That’s what I call an addiction.
After I tired of fighting others with my zombie, I thought I was pretty much done with facebook. Well, that was over six months ago, and I still log on every day to update my status, check messages, and read the news feeds. I wouldn’t classify it as an addiction, so I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. My question is, if you’re going for more PR, is it really worth spending time on nofollow social media like facebook?
That is a great 2 step program. making a viral video is a great idea if you can make one that is interesting.
Good points .. I am not so much familiar with facebook.. So this information is somewhat new to me..
thank you for sharing..
Social Media will suck up all of your time and not provide the long term results that you are looking for. IMHO

That would all be just sad if it weren’t all true. Lol- I had a nasty FB addiction when I first signed up- Super Poking was my crack- but have leveled off now. I usually only use the FB app on my BlackBerry and I always ignore FB application invitations. Waaaayyyy too time consuming.
Nice article, really detailed; and you have covered some really important aspects. I have been a lensmaster too. One other advantage is there, which is very crucial.

Not only is facebooking addictive, but people need to ask: Does it bring the traffic I want. I think social marketing does not provide good output for all the input required.

Thank you for the content, Its amazing.
Ok, I confess. I’m on Facebook and Twitter.
Facebook was more of a “I want to reach out to old friends and classmates” fix. I have had ZERO luck driving traffic from Facebook, but it’s not really want I started using it for.
For the record, I’ve kinda burned out on Facebook, for all the reasons listed above. I still check in every once in a while to see what my buds are up to, but I don’t do the updates.
I had to wean myself from the Mafia application. That was kinda addicting.
As for Twitter, I’ve just started that. I’ve had some traffic success, but it is terribly time consuming.
Someone remind me why we do this again?
Yeah, people are getting attached to this social networking thing. Particularly Facebook is becoming stronger on the mind too suprisingly.
I just started using Facebook a lot. I think the real culprits are the multitude of mini-games on Facebook! I know a couple of people that are addicted to Mafia Wars.

For me this strategys hardly work, I think you really good ideas to generate some good traffic. Only a few people will get the traffic.

Great article! I found Facebook addictive for while but with the new homepage layout I now find it annoying enough not to bother going on it so often. I don\’t plan to go on Twitter as I fear I will get addicted and end up spending far to much time on it so I\’ve decided to just give it a miss. No doubt I will give in to curiosity and join to see what it\’s all about at some point though as I did with Facebook!

I don’t think that getting backlinks from facebook is worht it. You need to spend a lot of time on it and the effects are never certain.

I know exactly what you mean. Up until last month I’ve been spending on average 4 hours on twitter. The addiction was terrible. If you’re not addicted yet, better don’t even start.

I know what are you talking about because one of my friend spends his whole day with twitter and some other social network sites. These can be addictive and it is impossible to get out of it for a while.
I am totaly addicted to social networking I twitter and use facebook and love blogging so yeah i am an addict.
Never really been into all these sites, especially twitter. I dont see the fascination with knowing what somoone is upto 24/7
I hate facebook, I cannot get my pics to post so I refuse to have anything to do with them. Myspace is a joke. I think it has caused many divorces and unnecessary scandals. So I keep to myself in my own little cubicle world, lol!
The real problem is people go on facebook not to buy something. They are not the right traffic to make a sale. Some companies do well with email list or sending out news on new products but not many make money from face book or alot of the other sites. The video would be easy set it up and make sure to market keywords and link. If facebook or twitter has so much traffic then they have new post and updates so how can you get site listed well and how many people will read about the same product over and over.

facebook doesnt allow comment more than 25 in a day from same user ID and you have to enter captcha codes to post frequent comments .
lol, i know some people who cannot stay away from myspace or facebook. They check it literally every chance they get as if something new is going to pop up

I agree with you there. Myspace is just ridiculous and the new Twitter craze is unbelievably annoying. Those social media sites cost so much more time than they’re worth.

My wife started a facebook account and found many lost friends – great she was excited…. now they have run out of things to say to each other … probably why they drifted aopart in the first place!
This post would be funny if it was not all too true.
Social media has a place but the point is to be social as well as drive your business. Somehow that little snippet got lost somewhere.
I agree with your “Facebook” analysis and frankly i prefer Twitter anyway. It takes little time is spam free (relatively) and there are no annoying Apps driving you to slay the rest of your friends etc.
Thanks for the laugh.

I saw inetresting thing on the national last night about facebook and how they do not keep your information secure. They can find almost naything they want about a user and facebook never removes the information even if you unsubscribe. I never tried the site did not see how to use it for business let alone why it is so popular.
Yeah, I also heard about their problems with data security. As for facebook use for business – why not try?
been using facebook a while and i think that anything that popular will always get plus and minus issues
Drug rehab is OK, it was worse if Facebook had left those people with not hope of healing at all. We start to talk about internet addiction, I don’t personally think there is such a thing, how would you define it?
Hi…
Thank you so much for sharing. The irony of the last line is amazing. Enjoyment and success do not walk together. If you are successful, you cannot enjoy it because you have no time for it. And if you are enjoying, you can never be successful.
I was an Orkut addict, often logging in and logging out several times a day. Going into communities and keep refreshing the page to see if there are any new posts. Now I am glad that I don’t use orkut much, to help me, Google deleted my previous profile which was more known hehe for some violation reasons. Now I rarely go on orkut and also on facebook. It’s good to the extent of communicating but don’t go beyond limits.
I found Facebook addictive but the new homepage layout I don’t really like and now I don’t go on it often. I really like Twitter but fear I will get addicted and end up spending far to much time, they all are fun in the beginning though.
Yes, many people have problem with drugs, so rehabilitation centers are very hepful.
First of all, I quite like Tim’s idea… but that would lead to me becoming addicted to social networking sites, as you’ve pointed out. You’re quite right about facebook, there are people who are on it every half hour telling us they’ve just had lunch and they’re ‘too full now!!!’ It’s not really a place to keep up with real friends, it’s about getting as much attention and as many fake friends as possible.
