I was recently over at Lissie’s Passive Income Online site, trying to figure out what was going on with the whole Site Build It Review thing that was mentioned on a couple other blogs out there. I think the whole argument speaks for itself, so I won’t get into the pros and cons or the rudeness of various players in the ‘debate’. Let’s just say things got a little heated, especially when Vic got in there!

I did read all of the comments to the review Lissie put out there. While many of these were downright funny in a pitiful ‘you don’t get it do you’ kind of way, I picked up a couple interesting points that really never clicked for me before. Here is Griz’ comment on Lissie’s blog, as he is attempting to educate an SBI’er:

“Vacuum cleaners… lol.

An oil filter keyword. A term searched by people who don’t know how to define what they are looking for. Once the serp page opens they realize that what is on the page isn’t what they are looking for and type a new query like “how to fix my hoover” and then “who fixes hoover vacuum cleaners in timbuctoo”.

People don’t buy vacuum cleaners online”

This points out exactly what is wrong with some of the sites I have been working on.  Basically, my keywords don’t result in much useful traffic because they aren’t defined enough. I now think back to my own searches online, where I get to the first results window and think, “All of these suck! I’ll just try another search…”

I guess I’m realizing it isn’t enough to get ranking for a keyword or niche. People have to actually get to your site!  Serious income will only be found if you are in a niche where people will buy online, or are willing to click on an ad, and where there is a lot of these motivated people. Or each clickthrough is high priced. Right there I can throw away all 3 of the projects I was about to start this month. My keywords seem to be either not defined enough, or for some obscure thing that hardly anyone will ever search for. I can get all the backlinks I want and it won’t make me more than some coffee money.

Damn it! How can I keep forgetting how to research?

On the positive side tho, Lissie inadvertently saved me all that hard work I was about to put out there for perhaps nothing. So thanks Lissie, and thanks Griz. Eventually some of the info you give away for free at Make Money Online with Grizzly will beat its way through my thick skull.

I’d like to see a follow-up in terms of how your stats reflected the more detailed keywords you started to use.

I’ve definitely heard of this animal called keywords but I don’t fully understand it or use it. Is it all about the title of the post?

Or do the tags you use in your post help at all? I should probably research this myself or go to Lissie’s post but I’m lazy and am hoping you’ll just give me a primer in a return comment.

    (insert cheesy smile here)

Great post. So true that people do not realize that the keywords site is listed for make the biggest diffenece in amount of sales. I am amazed sometimes at the search terms people use but i agree they then refine search to find what they want. Successfull sites know how to research terms and find ones that people want to buy something right away.

Cardiogirl: Yeah, maybe I’m not the best one to take lessons from :) Keywords are really important if you want search traffic. Do a search for Cardiogirl and your site is on top, although I’m pretty sure that Myspace page is some other cardiogirl… You rank not to bad for “converse low tops” at # 12, so if you were looking to monetize that kind of thing then mentioning converse low tops in post titles would definitely help people find you for that. About 1300 people search for those shoes every month on google, according to my very hasty research. So that would be where the backlinks I mentioned in an earlier post come in, to get you higher in the SERP’s so that some of those 1200 get to your site. Right now you are on page 2 of the search results, if they use quotes around the term in their search. For real results as I understand it, your site needs to be on page one, in the top five.

Often times I get really confused about what bloggers are getting into chatting about as I am very new to the whole blogging thing. I am however very passionate about what I spend my time blogging about.

When I landed here and saw this post I thought it was going to be a thread about SBI. I order site build it when I was first getting into starting up something on the web and found it nearly worthless for what I was wanting to accomplish. I really do not find their product all that useful but I do have to say one thing for them and that is the fact they kept to their guarantee and gave me a refund when I informed them that I was unhappy with their product.

I wonder how your keywords are doing. i mean you have couple pretty competitive ones, no? I’d like to see more detailed info.

  10. tom from Miami web developers says:

I guess that makes sense. I usualy just scan through the first 5-6 results and realise that the term is too wide and go in more details. And most websites is not promoting itself for 5-word long keywords.

  11. The Van Man says:

It is all about the search engines finding the right page within your site. If they are looking for a Ford Transit for sale and you do well on those keywords, but the sumary used by Google doesn’t mention Ford Transits you could be top but no one will click on your site!

  18. John says:

The hardest part about the web and a site is defining a clear cut keyword to focus on. I have made this mistake several times, thinking too big, trying to be everything to everyone in a subject, and ending up with nothing really.

As a single person doing all the work on my sites myself, you really have to learn to focus your efforts on a single keyword, maybe a few related and that is it in order to get any decent results.

  21. michael says:

As a prolific article writer for blogs as well as magazines I can state that probably the most important thing to remember is to give valuable content to your blogs. The longer the article the better. Search engines like google like long articles and some keywords in (not too many) but with headers in them in bold as google regards them as more authoritative.

but useful and sensible content means people will pass the link along to others and that can make a big difference to the visits to the site.

Actually, people DO buy vacuum cleaners online. I am constantly amazed at what people buy online. They also click on ads that are relevant to what they are searching for. Even vacuum cleaners.

You can make money with just about any niche that has buyers. You just have to figure out how narrow to go. Hit the sweet spot, so to speak.

Why do people buy things online that they can buy in a store? Well, for me, I will do just about anything to avoid going to Wal-mart. I think a lot of people hate the hassle of going to the store. Plus the selection online is phenomenal when you know where to search.

Good luck with your keywords. Hope you have good tools!
