If You Have Allergies, Try Playing Board Games

Recently, whilst enjoying a bite at Stratosphere Las Vegas, I became deeply lost in thought.  When I eventually found my way out of the nigh-endless maze of my own mind I thought I might write down some of the things that I had uncovered in there.

Running the kitchen at The Redneck Bar and Grill, from time to time I hear unusual requests from our customers ( I‘m sure Corrina knows what I’m talking about).  One day a lady told the server that she had just been released from the hospital after receiving a bone marrow transplant.  As a result she was extra susceptible to any food borne bacteria, so she asked that her Italian sausage and marinara penne be extra thoroughly cooked.  Now, I want to point out that our kitchen is maintained at the highest level of cleanliness that it possibly can.  However, if I was in a situation where I was as vulnerable as this lady I would want to make certain that I knew everything that was going into my food, and I would want it prepared by someone who loved me and truly cared about my health instead of taking a chance that my meal was made by some teenage boy who was far more interested in either texting his girlfriend or the plunging necklines of the servers’ blouses.

Also we quite often get people in who say they are allergic to gluten.  Please don’t mistake me here, I am not making fun of anyone with Celiac Disease or other allergies (in fact a close acquaintaince of mine is allergic to peanuts; if he has any he breaks out in a rash, but just on one part of his body, one very specific, very personal part of his body, and I would never dream of making fun of him).  However, if you tell me that you are so allergic to something that even so much as one molecule will kill you; then I’m sorry but, again, you may want to prepare your own meals.  In a busy kitchen there are all kinds of things just floating around and you never know where they might land. You wouldn’t want to end up with allergy induced asthma.

Then again there are some customers who will order something like a mushroom-cheeseburger with fries and then ask you to not salt the fries because sodium is the devil.  But I guess the processed cheese, ground beef and deep fried potatoes are perfectly healthy.

Personally, if my own health was as precarious as some of these people claim theirs is, I think I might spend every day just sitting at home eating celery, drinking super-purified distilled water and playing board games.  But then again I’d have to be extremely careful that the sharp edge of the race car or the top hat didn’t puncture my bubble.

  1. Great info about Allergies, and nice picture. thank a lots.

  2. That’s one evil looking burger, and I understand how you feel about the salt, but I kinda feel that way myself. Eat unsalted fries, and it doesn’t kick off the guilt, but eat salted fries, and you just start feeling like you’ve done something horrible. It’s all in the mind, I think – because salted fries taste so much better.

  3. I’ve worked in restaurants and know both the intentional and unintentional things that can happen to food. That doesn’t stop me from eating out, tho.

  5. I heard of someone who got a 6 figures settlement from McDonald’s be because of the hygine. If I tell you, you probably don’t want to hear the story, it will probably give you a good idea of what the settlement was about.

  6. My Mum and sister have Celiac’s but the way its diagnosed is quite peculiar if you have a positive on a test it means that you have the allergy, but if you have a negative it can also mean you have the allergy, but it just hasn’t been picked up. Which makes you ask the question what’s the point in the test in the first place. I think since the introduction of self diagnosis books a large number of people have suddenly developed allergies that a lot of the time are just in their minds. If I had a peanut allergy or something similar that can be life threatening as you said I certainly wouldn’t trust anyone apart from myself to prepare my food.

  7. I’m amazed at the entitlement attitude of some people. No illness is funny, or should be made fun of. But this is bordering on the absurd … I’ve spent one summer working at a burger joint back in high school and some people thought that just because they are e.g. allergic to gluten, they suddenly become kings of the whole diner. Taking orders would take several times as long, and it always seemed that they picked the worse thing they could get. Like ordering a gluten soup, but without gluten ;) And then they would make a huge fuss about their food not being there 2 minutes after the order.
Yeah, i might just be venting here, but bottom line is: people like this should prepare their own food. Being a bastard makes you prone to “surprises” in your food and while I never witnessed anything like that, I am sure there are disturbed individuals out there that would add something you’re allergic to just because you weren’t nice.

  8. I agree with you – If the lady mentioned really needed to be certain that her food was cooked in a particular way perhaps she would have been better off cooking it herself. But then she wouldn’t have experienced the wonderful cuisine at the Redneck Bar and Grill.
Joking aside, I have a lot of sympathy for people with special dietary requirements. These can impose such restrictions on a persons life, what they do, where they go and of course the food that they can’t enjoy.

  9. Aww, but salty foods are so good! I’m glad I don’t have any severe allergies like that… You can’t play board games by yourself when all of your friends went out to eat someplace delicious like the RB&G!

  10. No salt the fries because sodium is the devil… reminds me of people that order a triple bacon cheeseburger but request a DIET coke because they are watching their weight.

  12. That’s a good ending except when I play board games I like to drink, smoke, and eat cheese fries…I guess it wouldn’t be too good for my health :)

  13. That’s the problem with our society..we drink water out of a plastic bottle because we think it’s cleaner than drinking out of a tap. Most of the time our tap water is cleaner but we choose to buy a 24 pack of bottled water, drag it home and then pollute the earth with the garbage it creates…it’s ridiculous.

I have a friend who will only buy her cigarettes from one particular store because she thinks it’s cleaner than the other stores. Yep, that’s right, she has to buy her cancer sticks at the clean store.

  14. If I am sick, I would never go out to eat. Much healthier for you to eat bread and butter at home and not end up in the hospital.

  15. People are silly. They think that once they’ve been released from the hospital there’s no risk to their health and they can go about their life as usual. It’s stupid.

  16. It’s a good thing the human body can take a lot of abuse.
Food born bacteria risks + sausages = a recipe for disaster.

  17. So, when did the glutin thing become such a problem? I am not being mean, I guess I have been in a hole for sometime, but I seems this has been something big recently. The only thing I don’t like on my food is a ton of salt, other than that I leave hygene up to the inspectors.

  18. I think that is insane, i really can’t imagine what people in other countries think of us, they have way more relaxed health laws and they are all alive and well.

  19. Thanks for the great information on allergies.

  20. health is something that is very important to the case.

  27. Ilove the picture of the hamber!

  28. It’s unfortunate that people don’t realize that the only people who are concerned of your well being is yourself and loved ones. Those outside that spectrum generally have some other mandate and in this case serving the customer food ASAP and giving a enjoyable experience. Not to say the customers health isn’t important or in the minds of the business but it’s not the top priority. In this case it’s like giving a kid your mint condition collectors model car. The kid probably won’t intend to break it but… a scratch here and there is just going to happen.

  29. Great post, pretty sure that I will never eat a hamburger again lol. You have some really great stuff on allergies thanks for sharing.

  30. this is crazy, I don’t know if I will ever eat a hamburger ever again!

  31. Its sad to know that the celiac disease carries higher mortality risk and I really liked your approach of taking things easy. Playing board games also relieves your mind from stress, which i think is the mother of all disease causes. Stay away from stress you will stay away from allergies, diseases etc.,

  32. That is a dangerous hamburger!

  33. well, having an allergy is really a difficult thing for an individual, you cannot it what you ever want to eat, you must first examine the food that you are going to eat before eating it, well, in your case, it is really a must that you be careful in preparing a food, you must consider the costumer’s health.. thanks for this article..

  34. nice post. I like the hamburger pic.

  35. I feel so blessed i don’t have to worry about food allergies. Going out to eat would be hell.

  36. I totally agree with you. If that lady mentioned in your post really needed to be certain that her food was cooked in a particular way, maybe she would have been better off cooking it herself. But then she would not have experienced the wonderful cuisine at the Redneck Bar and Grill.

  37. Tough as it is, but there are people allergic to almost anything but who can blame them. I suppose if they have allergies and eat out, and they’re uncertain of anything that is in the food, why not have with them a drug recommended by their physician. Of course we don’t want them to suffer or so, it’s just a measure we just have to take.

  38. there are various types of allergies even we do not know their names.thank god i do not have to worry about these allergies.nice post.

  39. Well i think your post is different because you are describing games with Allergies. Playing Board Games are good and i just love it. Anyways keep it up and keep continue.

  40. One of the more outstanding ideas someone has come up with – really in my eyes, great comparison games with allergies.looking forward for different ant interesting post.well i like your new look of your website.

  41. In New York, the State passed a law providing that many restaurants must put their food’s nutritional content on the menus. It seems like such a headache. The diner has to share some responsibility for choosing restaurants that serve food that’s edible to them, rather than pushing this burden on to the restaurateurs out there!

  42. great information, please keep posting.

  43. A Terrific hamburger.

    Nice picture.
