Well, it’s been a few weeks since I was last seen at The Redneck; and probably many of you have been wondering if I went on another pointless holiday sabbatical.  I haven’t.  Rather I simply decided to spend some time in my un-happy place.  It’s a dreary place where the clouds cover the sun all the time.  It snows every night, then melts every day around here.

Now, you must be wondering why who anyone choose to spend time there.  Well, I’ll tell you why right now.  You have to spend time in your un-happy place once in a while otherwise you won’t be able to properly appreciate you happy place.

It’s like that brilliant philosopher, Butthead, once said, “If nothing sucked and everything was cool all the time; it’s like, how would you know it’s cool.  You have to have stuff that’s sucks in order to have stuff that’s cool.”

So now when I eventually make it back to my happy place the sun will be that much brighter and warmer.  The air will smell that much more sweet as will the flowers.  For now though, I have to make the transition through my neutral place.  A place where everything is just kind of static.  But I’m really hoping I can get a case of that Weasel Flu that’s going around because that would make my life exciting and send me to my sick place (which I can usually only get to by having impure thoughts about Miley Cyrus).  Unfortunately the weasels that I hang out with are only afflicted with Acute Laziness Syndrome which I already have

  1. Cheers! You must be doing pretty well if you have to intentionally visit your unhappy place to catch a glimpse of the contrast. Come on back to happy land soon!

    Great tips!

Also a long time ago I was told to start morning with a smile to set the success of the day. Whenever I follow this simple strategy – it works.

  3. hey Ernie,
I have to agree with Beavis’s sidekick (I can’t use his name for fear of akismet). You can’t know happiness without knowing sadness. I’ve had a horrible bad back for the last few weeks. The pain reminds me how nice it is too feel good. Ying and Yang. ~ Steve, the trade show display guy
PS. Come back soon, and bring some Blue Beaver!

  4. khaled from Quad van lease says:

Aside from the snow it sounds a bit like Wales, rains every day, most days are dark and miserable and we get maybe 4-6 weeks of nice weather a year if we are lucky. Yes it does really make you appreciate when things are nice, just wish they would be nice a little more often.

  5. Well obviously without the bad you wouldn’t know good. But I’d like some small bad once a month (like flat tire or somethig) and happy the rest of the time.

I completely agree with the “unhappy place”. Some people find it hard to understand, but I think it can be very grounding.

  7. Trev from wine glasses says:

I agree with that great philosopher B***head – I too like stuff that is cool and don’t like stuff that sucks. Unfortunately for me I reside permanently in a place I call ‘Blues-town’.

  8. Ling says:

Can’t argue with that kinda logic. Apply that to blog posts, and you could say that we appreciate the good posts because the others suck. :)

P.S. – Not implying that any specific blog posts suck. Just a general observation, is all.

  10. Jeet from directory submission says:

As much as I agree with the ‘try the unhappy place’, I wouldn’t want to be unhappy frequently. I am sure one can just remember the bad days and get happiness out of present situation.

  11. I love a good wallow! There is something perversely enjoyable about it. There you sit on the couch all sad and depressed, and there is this little excited voice in the back of your head saying “Ooooo, this is so much fun. You do know you are being ridiculous, right? But ooooo, this is so much fun.” And then the wallowing gets boring, and you move into neutral, so you don’t shock your system by going straight into happy. Then that gets boring, or you get hungry, and you finally move into happy again, and enjoy life again.

  16. Paul from Broadband says:

I strongly believe that if you start the day happy, you will end up being happy for the rest of the day no matter what comes in between.

  17. ken from Cheap web hosting says:

I know some people who always put on that everything is great postive thinking always happy. I agree if you do not find your unhappy place every now and then you never appreciate the good times. I also worry about the so sweet or so happy people i sometimes see them as the ones who hold it in and then snap one day. So let me be unhappy now and then just buy me a beer and watch me smile after that.

I’m going to stand firm in the I’d Rather Be Happy All the Effing Time camp.

Now I have never been able to successfully hang out in that happy place at all times and I actively rue the effed up, sad place.

No offense to the folks who want to know the difference to enhance the happiness, but I’ve experienced a lot of really crappy stuff and it really has not enhanced the happy stuff I encounter.

In fact the sad place has taught me to wait for the other shoe to fall. As in, this current situation is all sweetness and light, but inevitably it cannot be sustained.

    Jaded? Yes.

So I guess we all work our travails in the best way we can, but I hate the snow and the clouds.

Good luck with all of that, though.

  21. Hi,
I completely agree with you because i know, balance of sorrows and happiness should be there in every life.
if you don’t know about sorrows you cant feel happiness.

Lol did anyone catch Petra’s comment? Not sure if people caught on… Anyway, I agree with the people here who say that they’d rather try to be happy all the time instead of going back and forth intentionally. I think that’s my preference as well.
