And speaking of not-on-Broadway Musicals; the other day I saw REPO! The Genetic Opera. Well, to be precise it was the movie adaptation of the opera. It kind of an unusual show, to say the least. It’s set in the not too distant future, after a worldwide epidemic of organ failures. A vast number of people die before a company called Geneco develops a solution. They come up with a drug called Zydrate that makes organ transplants a very easy procedure. Then, for anyone who can’t afford a transplant, Geneco also offers financing. The only catch is, if you miss payment they send out the Repo-Man to recover their property. Naturally, this leads to a lot of gore.
When I rented the movie I was expecting it to be along the lines of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or The Phantom of the Paradise; a lot of singing mixed in with the dialogue. However, apparently the producers wanted REPO! to be like a “real” opera which is entirely singing. So, there is about five minutes total spoken dialogue in the movie. At first this really threw me for a loop. After I finished watching it, I couldn’t really decide whether or not I liked it. My opinion was that it had a pretty interesting story, but they needed to talk more and sing a little less. Although there were a couple of songs that I did really like; Zydrate Anatomy performed by the Grave-robber and Amber Sweet and Infected where Shilo laments her fate. However, after I slept on it I realized that I did very much enjoy the movie. I even watched it again before I returned it.
There are some surprisingly good performances in the movie. It stars; Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head, Bill Mosely, Alexa Vega, Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton. Darren Lynn Bousman is the director. Now; I have, on occasion, made fun of Paris (although who hasn’t jumped on that ass bandwagon) but I have to say she turned in a really good performance as Amber Sweet in this movie. Both her acting and her singing are very good. As far as I have been able to determine, all of the actors also sang their songs and most of them do a very good job of it. In my opinion though, Paul Sorvino’s singing was the weak link, but his acting was solid.
So if you like to see some blood and guts and you have a desire to hear a rock-opera, you should check out REPO! The Genetic Opera. You can rent it, or I understand that it is playing in select theatres this summer or maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to catch a live performance in a city near you.
Sarah Brightman? Are you kidding me?
Now I don’t know what to think. I don’t know if I can stomach a slasher film/opera. My daughter, however, is into both (and loved Sweeney Todd) might though.

What a bizarre cast! I’m intrigued . . . Paris Hilton sings opera? Or is it more like a musical? Well, I guess I’ll have to rent it to find out.

Yes, I heard about Paris Hilton in Repo! Obviously, she was such a successful pop star that her next step should be to sing opera, naturally. LOL
Well I have to admit that this doesn’t really look like my type of movie…If it was more along the line of Rock Horror Picture Show I would give it a shot, but all singing…no thanks,I’ll pass..
crime scene cleanup
Hilton, organ repossession agencies and not much talking – Sounds like a surefire formula for a hit.
i loved this film as well, i hope they come out with more dark musicals like this, it was really pretty awesome and could get some young people inspired for real operas, even though they might be let down.
Sounds like an interesting movie visit. I heard Paris had some “voice help” when she did her cd. I wonder if it was the same for this movie?

ok so in bio today, our teacher told us about stories where people who recieve organ transplants take on the lifestyle of the person who donated the organ. for example, a very overweight man needed a heart transplant, and got a heart from a fitness nut.
I’m usually not a big fan of musicals, but I decided to give this a chance. I thought Repo was really good! I love how it had the goth look and feel of the movie! I also loved the style, visuals, and beautiful scenery it had! Darren Lynn Bousman did an awesome job!
i don’t know how i feel about this, it just seemed like the lyrics were for the most part horrible, it shouted b-movie but yet, i can’t get the music out of my head and its been weeks.
Paris Hilton always do some fool kind of stuff that make her popular.
I have to admit I am intrigued as well. Paris Hilton?! Certainly makes me want to watch it!!
Ya, I also know about Paris Hilton in Repo. She is a successful Pop star.
i think they should have given name (silent Movie) to this Film …
Only 5 mins spoken dialogues
Yup Its sounds Strange :0
Me Gonna watch this movie Soon…
REPO the Genetic Opera seems gory. You’re saying that the characters should speak more and sing less. But maybe it was really staged like an opera isn’t it?
Aside from the cast, the plot seems interesting, though I can’t wrap my head about it being an opera. I also would like to know, were they really the actors’ voices? It’s hard to verify in a movie.
That is so weird, I can’t believe the cast. Paris isn’t usually in the best movies in my opinion.
What an odd cast?!!? Paris Hilton is never in good movies. I am eager to hear what other people think
What a creepy movie. The idea look strange. This movie could be a horror movie with sub genre musical. This is a little rare combination.
Sounds like an inherently strange and bizzare watch. I’m guessing that I would be all for it since those type of musicals, operas, movies, etc. are generally right up my ally. Thanks for sharing this.
This is one interesting movie, although I don’t see why you could watch an opera/musical flick and complain about all the singing. Isn’t that what an opera is?
I Think this is horror movie with sub genre musical. This is a little rare combination.
Thanks for sharing this.
this Sounds like an interesting movie and its musical as well.
When I saw “REPO! The Genetic Opera” I felt it is very unusual. Not much spoken dialogue in the movie. It was not what I expected, but I liked it anyway.
Thanks for the post.
I am looking the same problem with the last Indiana Jones. Though it was one of the great trilogies of my youth, I was having trouble concentrating on a plot so thin you needed a magnifying glass to find it. Harrison Ford mailed that performance in.I find myself being drawn more to series types of shows rather than movies. I was completely absorbed by The 4400 TV show, and have been an avid fan of Doctor Who since the very first episode of the new series come out.
Timeshare Resales
Sarah Brightman has a great voice its always pleasure to hear her sing
