Twilight and the Bestiality vs. Necrophilia Debate

What with all the internet hooplah over Twilight being about necrophilia or bestiality, I thought I’d throw my two cents in. Be warned, not only might there be Twilight spoilers, this might be a lunch spoiler for some.

Before I start, I should point out that I read all the books plus watched both movies. My daughter convinced me to read the first book, and I was hooked. I got the rest of them and read nonstop until I was done the series. It isn’t my usual type of reading, but I loved it.

Many of the people commenting online about this don’t seem to have any knowledge of the storyline at all, judging from their comments on message boards:

“well i think it’s half necro, and half beastiality
Necro-Beastiality?”

“ok. from a sci-fi book lover. vampires are not animals, and they are UNdead. so it would be neither bestiality nor necrophilia.”

Well the first comment is just missing the boat entirely. There are no werewolf vampire combos available for Bella to get the hots for. The second comment shows a complete lack of the storyline as well. Bella has to chose between a vampire or a werewolf, people! Didn’t you watch the trailer at least?

Is a love life with a vampire necrophilia? I don’t think so. My understanding of this deviant practice is that individuals are turned on by the ultimate control of a motionless, unresisting, nonthreatening partner. This does not describe a mobile creature that can barely resist ripping into you to suck out your life force. So technically it might be necrophilia in a way because vampires have no life. But in practice it is obviously a different situation.

Same thing goes for bestiality and werewolves. Bella is attracted to Jacob, and was before she knew he was able to change shape. There is no indication whatsoever that she is all hot and bothered about dogs, wolves, or any other furry critter. Bestiality is usually with farm animals, because again, just like dead bodies, they’re easy. Most of these sexual deviants have issues with rejection and fear. A real guy or gal will be too threatening. Let’s tie up Bessie and get a stool! Werewolves could potentially reject you in a very bloody fashion, but Bessie already puts up with milking, so how much dignity does she really have?

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

  1. I haven’t read the books or seen the movies, but it’s amazing to how obsessed some people are over the series. My wife has a friend who talks liek these characters are real people…seriously.

I’m sure it’s a great read or watch though.

  2. Hmm, you have opened my eyes with the connection to Twilight and bestiality. Lucky for you, I am not a Twilight fan or a soccer mom so there were absolutely no spoilers in there for me!!

  3. I have no thoughts on Twilight. I haven’t read it or seen it. Other connossieurs of the genre say it is a pale rehash of earlier great works. I’ve seen “True Blood” and it seems to be “Beverly Hills 90210″ with vampires. “Moonlight” was decent but was canceled. “Forever Knight” was a fun series in the 90s. The Blade movies are excellent. But I have no thoughts about Twilight. No particular urge to read it or see it, despite your gung-ho enthusiasm for it. ;-) Too “kiddie,” I think.

Funny, a fellow blogger just reviewed “The Hunger” (1983) over on http://www.vampirefilmfestival.com/The_Hunger_-_Metropol_-_Lori_Bowen.html . That was a fun vampire flick.

The captcha is “horrid smell.” Where did you get this captcha program? I love the words it has.

    Hey, Marvin.
It is true Twilight is somewhat of a rehash at times. However, there are quite a few unique twists to this plot. And as I said, it isn’t my usual fare.

The captcha program has an option to let me pick the words. I believe my younger son emitted a ‘horrid smell’ right about the time I last updated it.

  5. Alright, I’ve heard of Twilight. I have no idea what it’s about. If pressed I was say it’s about paranormal activity but just because I’ve seen those buzz words online.

I’m still not sure what that even means, but I have to stick my nose in here even though I have no idea what I’m talking about.

I assumed this is like a gory version of Harry Potter with sex and teenagers. Is that right? I’ve thought about reading one of the books but I’m just not into vampires and I’m not a fan of Anne Rice.

Isn’t that what this is like — Anne Rice for teenagers?

I know I haven’t added to the conversation but I wanted to see what my anti-spam word would be.

    Decoy. Bo-ring.

  6. Oh lord! I have to give an additional comment because I finally got the mother of all anti-spam words.

    Leg

    YES!

Uh, there’s a typo up there in my other comment. It should say:

    “If pressed I WOULD say…”

Sweep the Leg, man. I should proofread my stuff before I hit submit.

  7. I also liked the books, and even the first movie, though I haven’t seen the latest movie. They aren’t perfect, but I can see the charm.

Like most books, describing it in a few words can readily give a skewed feel of the story and the appeal.

It’s not about sex (in fact, there’s very little about sex, other than building tension, though I think tension building for three books might be excessive). It’s not about a lot of things. They’re character novels and that’s the appeal.

Teenagers and the occasional adult identify with one or more characters. What they are is actually less important than who they are. Those that have read the books and disliked them (and they exist, though it seems less prevalent than those who have chosen to hate them without bothering to read them), probably are turned off by what are very teenage-type characters. Teens identify with them because they come off as genuine (which is the same reason they can be irritating for adults, myself included). Yet, other characters are very mature (like Edward).

I also agree that the bestiality/necrophilia type comments are coming from a position of ignorance, as are the categorization of Edward as a stalker, etc.

    At least, that’s my opinion.

    Cardiogirl:
You’re right about the teenagers, but no sex in the first two movies, and no Harry Potter either.
I don’t read Anne Rice, since vampires are really such a tired, dead, beaten mule. I would have never read these books if Bethany hadn’t pestered me about it for months.

  9. Sweep the leg, I never even thought about bestiality or necrophilia while reading the books (which I enjoyed . . . sort of). I just saw “New Moon” with my mom, who pronounced it “odd” and predicted she would dream about wolves that night.

I’ll have to ask her about the whole bestiality thing.

  10. Tim Ebl

    Hey JD,
I never once thought of necrophilia or bestiality, until all these internet debates somehow caught my attention and I realized most of these people are not even reading the books, watching the movies or even paying attention to the trailers on TV. How are they so clueless about the plot, and still bothering to comment?

  11. I dont care!
    I will still watch it

  12. kalena

twilight is the struggle of a teenage girl to shoose between a vampire or a warewolf. the debate comes from the face that tecnically its true, vampires are undead and warewolves are animals. no one is saying its half half they are saying that bella is like switzerland, neutral and team edward is necro and team jacob is beastiality. i have every book item and merchandise on twilight inc 4 versions of the movie. i have seen moth of the movies out thus far and studied this and wrote my college thesis on twilght, technically there is no debate. pepole are not hating they are just being politically correct

  13. Tim Ebl

Hey, Kalena. I hope your college thesis used correct spelling, punctuation and capitalization. I’d hate to have to shoose between a vampire and a werewolf. Did you really see moth of the movies? I know that pepole are not hating, but what about the people? I sure am glad you are making the most of your education….

  14. That was a weird comment by Kalena. At first I’d have thought he was a spammer but then he didn’t have a link. Now I think he’s just trolling the internet to defend Twilight! Thou shall not diss Twilight! The hysteria with this movie is crazy. I don’t know of another movie that’s had quite the same effect this movie has had on girls/women. It’s crazy!

  15. hahaha. this post just made my day. although i must say, i was not expecting a twilight post on a website called Redneck Bar and Grill.

  16. Liked your post – quite brave and makes sense. I’ve never thought there was bestiality involved in Twilight but honestly, I find the film disturbing (I am a vampire film lover, though). Something was really missing there. Regarding those comments on other blogs, I heard a rumour that people get paid to stir controversy around the movie. Those rumours can be wrong!

  17. I love Twightlight, and jacob is the best, team jacob!!!!

  18. Nice story, I’m waiting for thier next movie. ECLIPSE!

  19. I have never read these books but it is interesting that you enjoyed them. Perhaps they appeal to a wider range of audiences than I initially thought. Thanks.

  20. Ive actually had a good laugh on here! I just found you by purely searching and im glad i did, love the article, by the way i cant stand films about vampires! They are so disgusting with blood everywhere! Whats the big deal with them these days!??

  21. Before I saw Twilight, I hoped it could be a good movie, but i was very disapointed because it was not realy good for me. The story around vampires was really good, but the atmosphere was to dark for me.

  22. Carlitos

after not reading any of the books or most of these comments i would just like to say that these books are in no way vampire books. “real” vampires don’t sparkle…well if you count bursting into flames as sparkling then i guess they sparkle

  23. Kat

When it comes to the whole necrophilia thing, isn’t it just physically impossible for Bella and Edward to fornicate? If something is considered at least “undead,” it doesn’t have a blood flow that would be able to create an erection, or even to power the brain, which is necessary for sexual interaction to happen.

  24. I always got the impression that Twilight was just Dawson’s creek with vampires werewolves and the what not. I am a big fan of Buff the vampire slayer and yes lots of human undead (with soul) action in there. I love the Bessie analogy really put the bestiality question to rest “Bessie already puts up with milking, so how much dignity does she really have?” sums it up well.
I’m still not convinced about the whole vampire/undead not been necrophilia. I do agree in the strictest sense it not but a vampire was at one point dead. I’m sure there is some overly long word for this type of ‘fantasy un-necrophila’ :)

    Great Blog by the way.

I would like to point out that vampires don’t breath because they are re-animated dead bodies. So the bodily functions of humans do not work with Edward or any of his family. Therefore, it IS necrophilia since they are all dead and IS NOT possible for Bella to get pregnant from Edward. I don’t really care for the bestiality part since that is pretty self explanatory. Werewolves haven’t really change since the myths were created but I have to say Twilight f**ks up the image of vampires in almost every sense.

Not wanting to leave my two cents out of this, but when I first heard of the twilight movies I was kind of iffy on whether or not the books were anything worth reading about. So as a project for my college’s newspaper, a group of 8, very differing social and reading backgrounds, students (including me) decided to give this book a shot and pick 3 reviews to be published in the newspaper, which is a standard when it comes to popular novels/movies/shows as to not have any biased reviews.

We only needed to publish one.

The reason why for this choice was because the writing was very subpar and all of the characters showed 1-dimensional attitudes and in turn made the story predictable. We actually wrote up a short follow-up article that stated our opinions on what the story lines for the other books in the series might be about, and we go about 90% of it correct from what other readers told us.

And don’t take our word for it, as a collegiate newspaper, we need to keep in touch with other schools. So when we talked to students from Columbia, NYU, Rutgers, Stevens, etcetera… the reply was the same. The book was made for a teenage girl in mind and was written so childishly that it could only be marketed to young girls anyway.

Of course, we tried finding people who could explain why the book was anything more than subpar, but most of them were either freshmen girls right out of high school or students who admit they don’t read much and like something they can breeze through.

Of course, I’m not saying that as college students we have a good say on what is good and bad writing. Twilight obviously sold books, but from a college students standpoint… everything in America is being dumbed down, including books. As a sophomore in college, well junior now, I would rather have my (future) kids read books that fascinate the mind and gives them characters that could, themselves, be as real as me or you.

From what I saw in the Twilight series, it just feels like someone projected teenage fantasies into an old and worn out genre or horror and wrote most of it with monetary gain in mind. I just hope, for our sakes and for the upcoming generations, that books will be written with plot and story in mind.

That and I’m against sparkling vampires. They are dark, secretive, and cunning creatures who use planning and strategy to defeat their opponents.

  27. Do your research people who want to make a big deal about something they never read! I agree with many of you in the basic idea that this is a fictional tale that is there for entertaining us with a creative idea. It’s not about being sick or gross, just creative. Doesn’t take much p.i. work to see that one.

Ok, I’ve read all four books and seen the first two movies. But I honestly hate the saga. See, I read all of the books and loved them, at that point, the movie came out and I thought “Are the books really this bad too?” So I tried to reread them. I made it half way through the first one again before I couldn’t take any more. The writing was just, plain and simple, too awful. Not to mention how BRATTY Bella is, how creepy Edward is, and how ridiculous the entire plot is. But enough of my ranting, I don’t think there really is any necrophilia or bestiality. At least not directly, when you think about the personalities of Jacob and Edward though…

  29. as much as I do not like the story and find an offense to what they really are great stories of vampires and werewolves, teno to admit that the person or people who spoke this story are beside themselves.
For hate something, I got to know this thing, and since I know the story, I can tell that it just took the macabre side of the vampire story, nothing more.

  30. I swear, someone was having this discussion on the bus yesterday. I haven’t watched the films, nor read any of the books but I think people are getting reeeeally into this whole thing, to the point that I’m hearing ‘I wish I was a vampire’ on a regular basis. Huh??? Then you get people pointing out all the things wrong with Twilight and asking ‘since when do vampires look so good?’

  31. I read Twilight sometime back and liked it. Was a good and interesting read. Finished one and hope to read the rest sometime..

  32. Despite the presence of vampires, Twilight is a romance, not a horror, and anyone hoping to sink their teeth into a juicy gore-fest will be disappointed. There is action, of course, ignited by the arrival of a trio of wandering neck-biters (who, needless to say, are impossibly good-looking) that feed on the locals and lust after Bella’s blood, leading to a showdown in a be-mirrored ballet studio. Hardwicke sensibly introduces these rogues early. And yet, while she does have action credentials (working on Three Kings before shooting Dogtown), the sequences are occasionally predictable, the wire-work sometimes obvious.

  33. I guess the Twilight love just shows how much we regular people want to escape real life and find a juicy romance to sweep us off our feet. You don’t have to think about how real is it or how lifelike is it because it’s just not going to happen to us, so you can take it anyway you want.

  34. I saw in the Twilight series, it just feels like someone projected teenage fantasies into an old and worn out genre or horror and wrote most of it with monetary gain in mind. What they are is actually less important than who they are. Those that have read the books and disliked them. Twilight is a romance, not a horror, and anyone hoping to sink their teeth into a juicy gore-fest will be disappointed.

  35. I was addicted to the twilight series. It is definitely a good read.

  36. You are right about Twilight and bestiality, even though I still watch it as long as it’s not too boring.

  37. I haven’t read the book but watched the first part of the movie. It was fairly good. But my friends who read the book say that it isn’t very interesting. The book looks fat but just to over descriptive about the petty things.

  38. All these cries of bestiality and necrophilia is just a way to stir up controversy. Like the whole Harry Potter witchcraft thing.

  39. Ooh stop the whole necrophelia thing allready. It’s fiction. Not reality

  40. Haha, I love your sarcastic response. I wish people would stop making comments about books and movies that they clearly haven’t read. If you don’t know anything about the book, then why would someone feel obligated to make comments about it?

  41. I think in the 2 cases before Bella is attracted to know his other side. I’m talking about vampire and Hobro Lobo and I do not think I could have been the case of necrophilia or bestiality because in both cases is present the humanity of each one.
