So, usually when I run out of things to blog about I just surf around the interweb, reading other peoples’ blogs and stealing their ideas. But this time I decided to do something completely different. I was over at The Rundown a few days back and I read a very interesting post that inspired me to write something totally original. Manodogs was talking about a re-release of “Plan 9 From Outer Space” coming this summer, in 3-D.

As I’m certain many of you are aware, Ed Woods’ magnum opus is widely considered to be the worst movie ever made. Alas, I have never had the pleasure of watching it so I can’t say wether or not it is so. However, I got to thinking that “Plan 9″ may have once held that illustrious distiction, I believe that there are some other more recent movies that should be given consideration.

For example, I was just reading about “From Justin to Kelly” (I’ve never felt self-abusive enough to watch it). According to IMDb the plot is as follows: “Spring break in Miami is the scene. It’s where surf-drenched guys cruise girls in bikinis and raucous parties rule day and night. It’s the perfect time and place for three young women from Texas and a trio of college guys from Pennsylvania to find adventure and maybe even fall in love.” Sounds totally tubular doesn’t it? ?Well, one critic said, “The notion behind it is as contrived, forced, manipulated and fake as any film ever made.” I guess that says it all.

One would also have to take into account such screen gems as; “Glitter”, “Crossroads” and (of course) “Gigli” when one is considering the worst movies ever made. Aagin, I’ve never had the good fortune to see any of these so I just have to take the entire rest of the worlds’ word for it.

Now, as for movies that reeked with stinkosity that I have seen: “I Know Who Killed Me” was pretty awful; Lindsay Lohan as a stripper who never took off her clothes, what’s up wit’ dat? Actually though, for me it’s a toss up between “The Hulk” and “Batman & Robin”. They both caused me irreversible brain damage; those are some neurons that I ain’t never gonna get back.

So I’m sure Ed Wood did his very best to do the very worst; but I’m sorry to say there has been about two new generations of supremely lousy writers and directors since his day. I’m sorry Ed.

  1. hi Ernie,
I agree that the Hulk movie was disappointing, but I don’t know how the reviewer in your post could knock any movie that includes “girls in bikinis and raucous parties”… :)
I don’t know anything about “Plan 9 from Outer Space”… but I did see just plain “Nine” on DVD. Well, actually I only watched the first ten minutes and then turned it off… so I guess that would be my most recent stinker experience.

Of the most pointless I’ve seen lately, “Where the Wild Things Are” is up there. The movie starts out good, but once the kid meets the monsters the movie gets really slow and boring. Yep, I know it was all to teach the kid a lesson, to see what a monster he was, but at least entertain me while you’re at it.

“Tropic Thunder” was near the worst I’ve ever seen, ever ever.

    M. Night Shyamalan might be trying to top Ed Wood, what with his latest film, “The Last Airbender”. I don’t know how you spend $150 million and only get a 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can just have explosions for an hour and a half and at least 10% of the audience will like it, like how Michael Bay does it. Coming from The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable to The Happening and The Last Airbender, he must be purposely trying to make the worst. film. ever.

The worst movie I ever saw was called the Jar. It stated completely dark, then a closet door opened and showed a jar on a closet shelf, then closed to darkness. Minutes went by and the door opened again. I believe there was conversation as multiple people opened the door from time to time, mostly darkness. The jar never moved.

We couldn’t watch it directly as it was too bad, but we left it on just to see what happened. It ended as it started with the door closing to darkness with the jar still on the shelf as it had been the duration of the movie. In the darkness came the best part of the whole movie: “THE END!”

Not much better was the new movie “Greenberg” with Ben Stiller.

  6. I dont\’ recall the name of the worst movie that I ever saw, but it was involving this group of gang members trying to get across New York City, complete with late 70\’s bad getups and horrid music. Maybe that\’s the true mark of a bad movie, you erase the name from your memory.

Ghost Rider …. sorry but I’m just sick of the crappy comic book movies that fail to deliver. Nic Cage as Ghost Rider was a bad choice by the casting crew.

The worst movie I watched lately was “Avatar: The Last Air bender”. I originally am a fan of the cartoon series so I was thrilled that it will be filmed. My excitement turned into disappointing turn of events when I finally saw the movie. Why do they have to relive the story when definitely what they will make is incomparable to the original one? It’s quite a waste of money and time. I think they should have improved on the details as well as on the cast of characters.

I have watched Plan 9, but that was one of those movies where it was so bad it was funny and entertaining – not just outright awful as many modern ones (I vote for Battlefield Earth) are. Plan 9 was made from props stolen from bigger studios at night (so the legend goes), and halfway through the main villain has to cover his face because the actor who started that part died while the movie was still shooting. Without a budget to edit, they had a new actor do every seen covering his face with his arm and a cape so people wouldn’t see it was someone else. It was HILARIOUS. It’s a Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie all the way.

“Bright Star” was two hours of yawn. Actually it was only one hour, as I switched off after that. It’s a period drama on the life of Keats, or at least his romantic attachment to a young girl called Fanny. Highly avoidable.

I have to say that Hugh Jackman’s ‘Australia’ is the worst movie I have seen in a long long time…I had a good mind to sue them for irrevocable waste of life I spent watching that drivel. The production budget would have been better spent on a bar tab at my local…the true life entertainment would leave an impression for a lifetime;-)
